The Black Panther Party was founded by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale. They were both originally involved in a non-violent civil rights activist group in college, however they were unhappy with how slowly they were making progress. The Black Panther Party was originally created as a self-defense group against the U.S. Government for African Americans. They were one of the first organizations in U.S. History to militantly fight for ethnic rights. They aimed for economic, political and social equality across races. |
Martin Luther King jr.Many of the participants in the Black Panther Party were tired of waiting for change using Dr. King's non-violent methods. They felt that there was no progress being made. They wanted change as soon as they could get it, by any means necessary.

Huey NewtonMathew Johnson was an unarmed african american boy in San Francisco, Huey Newton observed the violent rebellion that followed. This is where Newton had the idea that made the Black Panthers different from every other black activist group. He wanted to use the explosive anger of the ghetto as a force. He believed if he could stand up to police he could form the group into a political power.
